The New Year is exhausting.

I’m usually an optimist on any given holiday. I enjoy anything that includes extra glitter, food and celebrations. However, The New Year is exhausting in many different ways.

The exhaustion of a New Year doesn’t just come from staying up past midnight which is always a struggle for me. It’s also mentally exhausting. During New Years we are always focused on how we can be a super human this year and how much we sucked last year. Focusing more on our past and future rather than being in the present moment, one of the most important things I learned from 2017.

A new beginning is so forced by society during a new year. How are you going to change your lifestyle? How are you going to change your body? How are you going to change your relationships? I’ve had my fair share of new beginnings and I’m telling you this, it’s much more rewarding to let these changes come naturally rather than forced. We grow at our own time and not by January 1st, two thousand whatever.

I used to be obsessed with New Year’s Resolutions and sharing my goals for the upcoming year with the world. I even created a vision board art piece last year but lost it a month after posting about it. Do we actually set these resolutions to make ourselves a better person or to just prove to the world that we too have goals?

I hope you wake up everyday thankful for the lessons you learned from the previous day and how you can better yourself and goals daily.

With all of this being said, I did have a fantastic New Years which ended with a New Year’s kiss and pancakes for breakfast.

I wore crazy lipstick colors & here’s what I learned.

My secret is out… I’ve always been fascinated and totally jealous of women who can pull off badass lip shades. I’ve always been pretty safe when it comes to lipstick, whenever I put red lipstick on I want to take it off as soon as possible. I definitely stick to light pinks and nudes when it comes to my everyday lip color.

While I was at Walgreens, I saw NYX lipsticks on sale and kept looking at all of the crazy colors and finally thought “Whatever, I’m going to do it!”

I really excepted this to be social experiment more than anything. I thought there would be many double glances, odd looks, any just overall awkward and uncomfortable experiences. I was actually surprised to find that I didn’t get as many looks about my lipstick choices. I think it’s a little more common than I thought or people just kept all comments to themselves. Although the social aspect of it didn’t turn out as I had thought, I still learned quite a bit from this lip color adventure.

You have to think a little more about your outfit choices

Since I’m used to having natural tones of makeup and lip color, I can wear anything with my makeup. However, adding these pops of color had me exploring my outfit choices more than usual. I definitely felt I needed to be “extra” with just about everything as well.

It tests your confidence

The first day I wore the lipstick, I got really nervous to walk inside the grocery store! It makes you wonder what people think not only about your lipstick but what they think about you. Lip color can set a variety of first impressions for a someone. You can be seen as bold, intimidating, unprofessional, sexy, playful, etc. I think many women are interested in wearing all of these new and interesting shades but it is also extremely intimidating! However, I have found that you just have to stand tall and just own it!

LipColor-6

Navy Blue || NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Moscow

This was the first lip color I decided to wear and by far the most dramatic out of the three. It was defiantly a shock! This color I had the most double glances with but also quite a few compliments. I was totally nervous and unsure with this color but it grew on me by the end of the day! I think it definitely brought out some punk to my everyday look without going full black. My best friend also told me that she didn’t like blue at all in the beginning but it grew on her as “sexy and mysterious!” Although I don’t think I would wear this out during the day again, I would love to wear it again in the future. I would apply it for an evening out to a club or cool art event in the city. I think if you’re looking to explore a little edge in your look, go for the deep blue!

LipColor-4Bright Orange ||NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Orange County

Bright Orange might be the most “acceptable” out of these lip shades but definitely wasn’t my favorite. That being said, I enjoy shades of orange much more than shades of red. This is a color I would need to be in the mood for. This color made me feel very exotic and the need to be totally colorful! I think this bright orange would be fun to wear for a beach day or to any summer event.

LipColor-5

Deep Lavender || NYX Matte Lipstick in Zen Orchid

Okay, Seriously. I want all shades of purple lipstick! I think this color would look great for just about any event and time of day. You can add it as a fun pop of color during the day or dress it up for the evening. Purple is a very creative color so I thought the perfect outfit for the day was a casual t-shirt which says “Inspire and Be Inspired” with a floppy hat. Let’s just say, I’ve become a huge fan of purple.

What is your favorite crazy lipcolor?

Increasing your motivation while working from home.

Dreaming big is one thing, being motivated and working toward those goals is another. Working from home is pretty fantastic, it comes with all of the perks of working on your own time, taking your lunch when you please (actually eating whenever you want) and in the comfort of your own home. You are your own boss! Groovy.

However, it can also be very difficult to stay motivated when you work from home. When you don’t have a nine-to-five job to run to, it is easy to get into the habit of waking up later, procrastinating more, and becoming overall a little more sluggish. I have a good friend who recently started her own business and she was discussing how when she started her own business from home she became depressed, even though this was something she’s always wanted!

Currently,  I am a full-time graduate student online, a freelance photographer and blogger and recently started selling Perfectly Posh. I have had to defeat the low motivation and productivity while doing all of my work from home!

Productivity.jpg

Here are some things you can do to increase your motivation and productivity. (These could definitely apply to anyone, not just those who work from home)

  • Create a vision board

This week one of my good friends came over and we made vision boards. Place your vision board so you can see it in the morning when you wake up and in the evening when you go to sleep. Your vision board should be something you look at and take in before scrolling through Facebook. Think about YOUR goals and life at the beginning of the day instead of other’s lives.

Productivity-2.jpg

  • Wake up and meditate

When you wake up and meditate, you are setting positive and productive intentions for the rest of the day. There are many podcasts and even videos on Youtube that have guided meditation. 10-20 minutes is all you need each day to become present in the moment and set some good intentions throughout the day.

Productivity-7.jpg

  • Organize your day

Staying organized is very important. Make sure you invest in a planner that works for you or even better purchase a nice bullet journal and create your own layouts. Bullet journals are also really great because you are not only staying organized but it’s also a great way to get creative with your daily thoughts. My days are separated by events that day, to-do lists and also goals. Each weekly spread I also have a quote to reflect on and my weekly goals. Some bullet journal spreads are some serious eye candy. Can we also talk about my obsession with planner stickers?

Productivity-3.jpg

  • Get ready for the day

When you see advertisements for online schools they often say “Go to school in your pajamas!” I highly advise you not to do this. Sometimes you’ll just want to wake up late and stay in your pajamas because “you can.” When you stay in your comfortable clothes all day you have little motivation to do anything professional because you will not feel professional. I’m not telling you that you should get dressed up in a suit everyday but you should at least put on some pants and a decent shirt. “Dress for the job you want” they say.

Productivity-9.jpg

  • Set Do Not Disturb on your phone

Nothing grabs me more into social media than to see a notification. “Ooo attractive male liked my selfie? Let me stalk his Instagram feed for a minute” *20 minutes later on Instagram….* No, stop! I assure you, Felipe can wait. When you set the Do Not Disturb on your phone it will eliminate notifications popping up from all apps. If you will still be distracted by your phone after setting it to Do Not Disturb, place it in another room.

  • Move your body and get fresh air

Your body will always feel better when you get your blood pumping! You can get your blood pumping by doing yoga, going on walks, going to the gym or even dancing in your bedroom. Try to keep your body moving throughout the day as well. Often times I will go to the gym midday because I know my mind needs some movement, away from the screen. The fresh air will also benefit you. Every once in a while go out and get some fresh air. Take a walk around the block or eat your lunch outside. The sunshine will also be good for you soul.

Productivity-4.jpg

  • Take your work somewhere else

When I have little motivation I will pick up my things and go to another location outside of my home. My bed and Netflix often call my name. Libraries and coffee shops are great options to take your work. Some libraries have some great little spots where you can have complete privacy from anyone else. Personally, I find my best working vibes in coffee shops. Just me, my work and a green tea latte.

What do you do to stay motivated?

Here’s why the scale is a piece of shit.

Right now, I weigh the most on the scale that I have weighed in my life.

My 5′ 3″ body is currently 165. My “normal” is 150 and my thinnest? 129. Right now, I also believe I’m the healthiest I have been in a long time and it’s taken me until recently to recognize that.

I used to struggle with terrible anxiety and would constantly feel sick, nauseas and tired and it’s until recently that my anxiety has been getting much better then it was in the past and I can feel it throughout my entire body. When I weighed 129 I had an ulcer which part of the cause of my rapid weight loss during college. I lost 31 pounds. Everyone kept saying “Wow, you look so good!” which is what we associate with when people lose weight regardless of the fact that I looked sick, tired and stressed to my bones.

Recently I’ve been eating very well. I can’t even eat greasy foods anymore without getting sick and I don’t consume sweets nearly as much as I used to. I have also been hitting the gym regularly and keeping up with my yoga practice.

I keep stepping on the scale though and wondering “HOW?” & end up getting incredibly frustrated and upset. One day I finally texted my good friend who is fitness instructor and told him about my frustration and he himself said that I’m gaining muscle, the scale is full of lies and to be patient with myself and my body.

The other evening I went into the gym and told myself to run 3 miles because that was the last goal I accomplished. I hit 3 miles and told myself “Okay you’re going to do 4 miles now” which was quite the stretch because I’ve never ran that much in my life and once I got to 4 miles I somehow got a burst of energy and ended up reaching 5 miles! I was honestly shocked and so happy I started to cry. I literally got emotional over this. All of the frustration on the scale didn’t even matter anymore because I was thrilled that I could push my body that far and completely blessed that my body feels strong and healthy!

The singer P!NK actually posted on her Instagram about the same problem who is 5’3″ and 160lbs. She stated that according “regular standards” that is obese. I AM OBESE. I stand with P!NK, “dammit I don’t feel obese. The only thing I’m feeling is myself” (P!NK)

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Here are the important questions to ask yourself….Am I nourishing my body with the foods it needs? Is my body getting enough exercise and fresh air? Is my mind sharp? Do I feel healthy and confident?

Bodies are so different and your 140 could be different from someone else’s 140. Your body could be a size 10 but someone who weighs the same as you could be a size 7.

We shouldn’t experience happiness by the number it tells us on the scale but by how our bodies and spirits feel!

You are beautiful, you are strong and you are so much more than a number.

Opening Our Minds To Creativity.

Creativity is often and unfortunately pushed to the side as something that is not the most important skill to have in our daily lives, education, and careers. Creativity has become the green beans of the Thanksgiving meal when it should be seen as the turkey (or, the cherry pie) However, creativity is much more than playing with colors and crayons. Creativity is the motivation to innovation! Creativity helps us question, solve problems, and create. If there was no creativity in our lives we would still be living in the Stone Age.

Creativity is a vital skill to have on your resume and for good reason. Creativity is not only an important skill for employees but also enhances the environment you are working in. A creative environment for employees has become a foundation for successful companies today such as Pixar, Apple, Google, and Zappos.

Creativity is not only important in our careers and professional lives but our daily lives as well. Creativity makes life exciting and fulfilling!

Back to the idea of playing with colors and crayons.

Have you sat down recently with a handful of crayons just to scribble or doodle? I literally mean scribble. If you answered “no” I challenge you to take 10 minutes to do so and see what thoughts, questions, and ideas come up in your head.

“Creativity is experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun”
– Mary Lou Cook

“But I’m not a creative person!” you say. Did you know that creativity is something that is not just a natural-born trait passed down by our DNA but a trait that we can actually learn, build, and grow?

One of the best ways to help build your creativity is to open your mind and spirit to the world that is out of your normal comfort zone and environment. If you allow yourself to be stuck in one environment you will not have the room to grow your mind and gather new thoughts and ideas from other people, environments, cultures, or even religions.

My challenge to you is to try something new. Go somewhere new. Talk to someone new. Cook something new. Step out of your daily environment and routine. You might find a new passion or discover a new talent. You might come up with a groundbreaking idea and become a millionaire in the near future.

You might fall, you might fail, you might not even enjoy the outcome. Let me say this loud for everyone to hear in the back. FAILING IS OKAY. We are meant to fail and fall because this is how we broaden and grow our mind, thoughts, and nurture our creativity.

You CAN be creative!

Vision Board

Happiest 2017 to you!

Every year I wonder and ponder if I should share my New Year’s resolutions. Will I actually stick to them? Is anyone listening anyway? I was having the worst time writing a post about my resolutions and then became inspired by the idea of a vision board! Some people think that vision boards are bogus but there’s a lot of great research showing that they actually work! Plus, hey…it’s a fun and inspirational project!

What is a vision board? This is a board and collage made up with images, words, and quotes that inspire you to reach for your everyday or future goals. It’s a tool that will help one of the powerful mind exercises you can do…visualization! The Law of Attraction, people! If you see yourself in that place, time, and life everyday then that will become your life one day. The Law of Attraction is something I really believe in and wish I would apply it more into my life so I thought this would be a good step toward that!

I’m sure I will soon make a vision board of photos and printed quotes but I was feeling very inspired to create a piece of artwork the time and knew it would be a good step to get my mind on track of focusing!

The supplies you need for your project are a canvas, paint colors of your choice, printed out words and/or pictures, scissors, and modge podge. Also other creative supplies you would like to add…this is your vision! I of course chose some glitter.

_MG_3111.JPG

About my piece. I wanted my piece to represent a sun because sunlight brings me the most motivation and happiness. For my color choice I went with yellow and champagne gold. These colors really inspire me because they remind me of light and success.

The painting itself turned out much different then I first imagined it to be. Instead of shooting straight lines from the middle circle like a normal sun painting I decided to play with paint in a circular motion which created an orbit look in the galaxy to me! This actually makes sense and speaks a little more to the concept of my piece.

While my paint was drying I went into Photoshop to type up some words that are inspiring me. I used various sizes too based on what I want more focus on. I typed up and printed out some words in the font Traveling Typewriter…such a fun font that you can download here.

Once my paint was finished drying I cut out my words and scattered them around my piece and modge podged them into place. In the middle of my “sun orbit” I have placed a quote that says “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire

There are some words on my canvas that I would like to share with you.

Denver, Colorado….this is because my biggest goal this year is to move back to Denver! I fell in love with Denver while I was there for college and it became my own home. I have the greatest friendships there and know I could do really well there with my photography and artwork!

Education…I am starting my Master’s degree right now in Creativity Studies and I’m also doing it full time online so that is a huge focus for me the next year!

$$$$$ and Success…I really want to focus on making and saving money this year! Between traveling and making a move to a big city… I’m going to need it!

I have also added some other words that inspire me such as ambition, positivity, independence, kindness, and pamper (because as girl’s gotta treat herself)

This year I’m planning on working a lot and working hard! I love to see my daily planner filled with productivity. Between school, working, and my blog…it’s going to be a packed year of great opportunities  and success!

Holiday workspace.

I am a true Virgo and love organization! I also love the holidays so I’m totally in love with my desk and work space right now. Although I wish I had more decor around it sometimes you need a simple space to work well. I recently purchased this adorable corkboard from Hobby Lobby and I’m obsessed with the cute print! It goes very well with my with my mexican desert room decor. I have been so excited to add calendars, goal sheets, and other decorations to my board.

Check out these amazing FREE printables for Christmas! by Stitch In Time. I really hope this talented artist comes out with new calendars come January for the new year because I love her designs and illustrations! I love the Santa design and decided to back it with cute black and white polka dot scrapbook paper! Mixing patterns is one of my favorite things to do when it comes to home décor. This calendar has really helped me keep organized with events and daily blogmas ideas.

On my desk I have my little Christmas tree, my favorite Bath and Body Work’s Twisted Peppermint candle, and I decided that my computer wallpaper needed some Christmas cheer as well. You can find many free desktop and phone backgrounds on pinterest that are fun and beautiful.

Starting my book || The process

I’m doing what? I’m starting a book?
When I say I’m starting a book I don’t mean a novel, I unfortunately am not that brilliant at writing.  I am however starting a photography series and creating it into coffee table book which I also hope I can exhibit as well, this is the ultimate goal anyway.
I remember in school and discussing what we wanted to do when we were in our class going into portfolio and a few of my classmates said “Yeah, you’re going to be the fine artist” & here I am 2 years later doing exactly what everyone predicted. As much as I have tried to do commercial work I definitively think that fine art and teaching is where I truly belong.
I thought I would blog about my process through the book with a little bit of sneaky peakys as well.
Shoot something that you’re really interested in
This is a personal project so no one can really tell you “no, that’s wrong.” If you photograph something that you’re really interested and invested in it will show through your work and your artist statement. Since I am still trying to find my way through this project I’ve just been shooting a lot, even things that I might may not work well. Sometimes I’m really surprised as to where this is heading.
Artist Statement
I’ve always thought that artist statements were extremely important when it came to a serious of work. These words are what show the world that what you’re doing is art and has a lot of meaning behind it. This has been my biggest problem so far is my artist statement. Although I know what concept I’m trying to go for it’s really difficult to put this into words. Sometimes I just have to keep shooting and keep writing to get this started. This is something I will not reveal until my book is out.
Music
Something that has really helped with my inspiration about my book is listening to music that goes along with the theme of my concept. Music can help set your mind and mood in so many different ways. Indie rock music is definitely a great inspiration for me at this time. Mumford and Sons could never do me wrong.
