Twenty-five and feelin’ alive

TwentyFifth_1

& here we are….alive at 25!

I have been looking forward to 25 for as long as I can remember and I don’t have a reason as to why. I always knew great and big things would happen at 25, so I’m feeling pretty good today.

I have been seriously blessed this past year and have gone through so much personal growth! I explored more places in one year than I thought possible. Mexico, Palm Springs, San Fransisco, Seattle, Western Wyoming, Eastern to Western Idaho, and Western to Eastern Oregon! I also started working toward my Master’s degree in Creativity Studies and have a new direction of my future career goals. 24 treated me so well that I’m looking forward to seeing where 25 leads me.

Birthday reflections are so important to me. We always have goals, but do we ever take time to think and reflect about who we are as a person, what we have achieved so far and how we have grown? Here are some things that have made me grow since my last birthday reflection.

Self-acceptance

This is by far the greatest thing that has happened to me. Wow, it feels so good and something I never hope to lose. I strive everyday to be a better person and have become okay with my imperfections. Hating yourself and your body is the most damage you can do to your mind and soul.

Being alone is totally cool

People often feel bad when I do things alone. To be honest, I love to do things alone. Traveling, day trips, going to movies, reading in the park. Sometimes I just love to have a day to myself to do what I want and on my own time. You learn so much about yourself when you are alone! I encourage everyone to take themselves out on a date!

Accepting my alcohol anxiety

Secret is out, I used to have terrible anxiety around alcohol. This year I officially found acceptance to my problem and have tried to overcome it. I have become much more calm around alcohol and actually drink a little myself on the rare occasion. Although you won’t see me taking shots for along time, I would love to join you for coffee and baileys anytime!

Your mind is just as important as your body

Go and learn something new, read a book, take a walk. Your mind muscles should be just as strong as your biceps. Between school, reading more books and taking time for my mind through peace and meditation my mind is more observant.

Feeling healthy is so important

I have never felt healthier than this year. I have found a great balance in my diet, take daily vitamins, drink plenty of water, practice yoga and meditation and also get some sleep! The idea of “Working hard and sleeping when you die” is extremely overrated. Self care is crucial, friends!

Broken hearts have nothing on me

This year I have fallen in love and out of love. I was in a relationship and broke it off, simply because I know my worth. I have ZERO patience, time and energy to be treated with disrespect. Being single is much better than being in the wrong relationship. I no longer accept changing myself or my body just for someone else’s desires. This is why it’s important to fully be yourself before you get serious with someone else. I would love to find my soulmate and be married in the near future. However, I do not settle and I’m okay with waiting.

Keeping an open mind to changes

My life is always changing! Even though somethings don’t happen how they are supposed to, I know there is always something new around the corner. It keeps life so interesting and exciting. Sometimes things just do not work out, big deal. Just go with the flow and let life lead the way.

I wore crazy lipstick colors & here’s what I learned.

My secret is out… I’ve always been fascinated and totally jealous of women who can pull off badass lip shades. I’ve always been pretty safe when it comes to lipstick, whenever I put red lipstick on I want to take it off as soon as possible. I definitely stick to light pinks and nudes when it comes to my everyday lip color.

While I was at Walgreens, I saw NYX lipsticks on sale and kept looking at all of the crazy colors and finally thought “Whatever, I’m going to do it!”

I really excepted this to be social experiment more than anything. I thought there would be many double glances, odd looks, any just overall awkward and uncomfortable experiences. I was actually surprised to find that I didn’t get as many looks about my lipstick choices. I think it’s a little more common than I thought or people just kept all comments to themselves. Although the social aspect of it didn’t turn out as I had thought, I still learned quite a bit from this lip color adventure.

You have to think a little more about your outfit choices

Since I’m used to having natural tones of makeup and lip color, I can wear anything with my makeup. However, adding these pops of color had me exploring my outfit choices more than usual. I definitely felt I needed to be “extra” with just about everything as well.

It tests your confidence

The first day I wore the lipstick, I got really nervous to walk inside the grocery store! It makes you wonder what people think not only about your lipstick but what they think about you. Lip color can set a variety of first impressions for a someone. You can be seen as bold, intimidating, unprofessional, sexy, playful, etc. I think many women are interested in wearing all of these new and interesting shades but it is also extremely intimidating! However, I have found that you just have to stand tall and just own it!

LipColor-6

Navy Blue || NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Moscow

This was the first lip color I decided to wear and by far the most dramatic out of the three. It was defiantly a shock! This color I had the most double glances with but also quite a few compliments. I was totally nervous and unsure with this color but it grew on me by the end of the day! I think it definitely brought out some punk to my everyday look without going full black. My best friend also told me that she didn’t like blue at all in the beginning but it grew on her as “sexy and mysterious!” Although I don’t think I would wear this out during the day again, I would love to wear it again in the future. I would apply it for an evening out to a club or cool art event in the city. I think if you’re looking to explore a little edge in your look, go for the deep blue!

LipColor-4Bright Orange ||NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Orange County

Bright Orange might be the most “acceptable” out of these lip shades but definitely wasn’t my favorite. That being said, I enjoy shades of orange much more than shades of red. This is a color I would need to be in the mood for. This color made me feel very exotic and the need to be totally colorful! I think this bright orange would be fun to wear for a beach day or to any summer event.

LipColor-5

Deep Lavender || NYX Matte Lipstick in Zen Orchid

Okay, Seriously. I want all shades of purple lipstick! I think this color would look great for just about any event and time of day. You can add it as a fun pop of color during the day or dress it up for the evening. Purple is a very creative color so I thought the perfect outfit for the day was a casual t-shirt which says “Inspire and Be Inspired” with a floppy hat. Let’s just say, I’ve become a huge fan of purple.

What is your favorite crazy lipcolor?

Travel moments I still think about

I cannot believe that I have been home for a month after my month long trip! There are still moments and places that I still think about that I have yet to share on the blog.

Okay, Jackson Hole is really cute. I loved all of the galleries and shops. I’m definitely an art gallery gal. However, the most important thing I want to talk about from Jackson Hole is this ice cream. It was lemon honey and probably the best ice cream I’ve had. It was both refreshing and sweet.

Tetonia-38Tetonia-39

The drive from Jackson Hole to the Granite Hot Springs in Wyoming might have been some of the best miles down the road throughout my entire trip. I swear it was all so heavenly. Mountains, wildflowers and the bluest river water I have ever seen! I’ve never been to a hot spring before but I was definitely spoiled with Granite. I also saw a rubber snake…a real rubber snake! Rubber snakes look big worms and I wanted to take him home with me.

My friend Jason and I took a little trip to Brookings, Oregon which is apart of the coast I have never been to. What I love about the Oregon coast is you get the beauty of the ocean yet you can be cozy in a light jacket. It all reminds me of autumn without the leaves.

While we were having lunch in Brookings there were hundreds of seagulls…hundreds I’m telling you! These seagulls were flying around the marina and we overheard one of the waitresses say she has never seen that happen before.

I had my first nap during my trip at the coast house and that is definitely something to take note of because I seriously needed it and I believe there are no better naps than Oregon coast naps. That evening we headed to the beach to watch the sunset. I rarely watch sunsets but it was definitely one to remember. Not only was a it a great view on top of the rock we climbed but we also had some good belly laughs while people watching.

Increasing your motivation while working from home.

Dreaming big is one thing, being motivated and working toward those goals is another. Working from home is pretty fantastic, it comes with all of the perks of working on your own time, taking your lunch when you please (actually eating whenever you want) and in the comfort of your own home. You are your own boss! Groovy.

However, it can also be very difficult to stay motivated when you work from home. When you don’t have a nine-to-five job to run to, it is easy to get into the habit of waking up later, procrastinating more, and becoming overall a little more sluggish. I have a good friend who recently started her own business and she was discussing how when she started her own business from home she became depressed, even though this was something she’s always wanted!

Currently,  I am a full-time graduate student online, a freelance photographer and blogger and recently started selling Perfectly Posh. I have had to defeat the low motivation and productivity while doing all of my work from home!

Productivity.jpg

Here are some things you can do to increase your motivation and productivity. (These could definitely apply to anyone, not just those who work from home)

  • Create a vision board

This week one of my good friends came over and we made vision boards. Place your vision board so you can see it in the morning when you wake up and in the evening when you go to sleep. Your vision board should be something you look at and take in before scrolling through Facebook. Think about YOUR goals and life at the beginning of the day instead of other’s lives.

Productivity-2.jpg

  • Wake up and meditate

When you wake up and meditate, you are setting positive and productive intentions for the rest of the day. There are many podcasts and even videos on Youtube that have guided meditation. 10-20 minutes is all you need each day to become present in the moment and set some good intentions throughout the day.

Productivity-7.jpg

  • Organize your day

Staying organized is very important. Make sure you invest in a planner that works for you or even better purchase a nice bullet journal and create your own layouts. Bullet journals are also really great because you are not only staying organized but it’s also a great way to get creative with your daily thoughts. My days are separated by events that day, to-do lists and also goals. Each weekly spread I also have a quote to reflect on and my weekly goals. Some bullet journal spreads are some serious eye candy. Can we also talk about my obsession with planner stickers?

Productivity-3.jpg

  • Get ready for the day

When you see advertisements for online schools they often say “Go to school in your pajamas!” I highly advise you not to do this. Sometimes you’ll just want to wake up late and stay in your pajamas because “you can.” When you stay in your comfortable clothes all day you have little motivation to do anything professional because you will not feel professional. I’m not telling you that you should get dressed up in a suit everyday but you should at least put on some pants and a decent shirt. “Dress for the job you want” they say.

Productivity-9.jpg

  • Set Do Not Disturb on your phone

Nothing grabs me more into social media than to see a notification. “Ooo attractive male liked my selfie? Let me stalk his Instagram feed for a minute” *20 minutes later on Instagram….* No, stop! I assure you, Felipe can wait. When you set the Do Not Disturb on your phone it will eliminate notifications popping up from all apps. If you will still be distracted by your phone after setting it to Do Not Disturb, place it in another room.

  • Move your body and get fresh air

Your body will always feel better when you get your blood pumping! You can get your blood pumping by doing yoga, going on walks, going to the gym or even dancing in your bedroom. Try to keep your body moving throughout the day as well. Often times I will go to the gym midday because I know my mind needs some movement, away from the screen. The fresh air will also benefit you. Every once in a while go out and get some fresh air. Take a walk around the block or eat your lunch outside. The sunshine will also be good for you soul.

Productivity-4.jpg

  • Take your work somewhere else

When I have little motivation I will pick up my things and go to another location outside of my home. My bed and Netflix often call my name. Libraries and coffee shops are great options to take your work. Some libraries have some great little spots where you can have complete privacy from anyone else. Personally, I find my best working vibes in coffee shops. Just me, my work and a green tea latte.

What do you do to stay motivated?

So now what?

After every big trip I get the question “So now what?” which is actually a question I ask myself everyday at least 3 times a day. So, I thought I would do a simple post as to what is going on in my life now and my current plans.

As you may not know, I was supposed to be moving to Grand Junction, Colorado. After my month long trip in July the plan was to come right home, pack up and leave for Colorado. Well, life had other plans and nothing worked out how it was supposed to. Although I feel as though I had failed I remember one of my favorite quotes…”God will wreck your plans if he sees your plans will wreck you”

Currently, my home will remain in Southern Utah and I will be traveling as much as I can, while I can. Also, focusing full-time on school until I graduate in April. Outside of school and traveling I am spending time on my creative work and building my future business. I am also still involved with the Art Museum by being a docent for school groups which I love so much.

In October I will be working at my family’s farm called Moon Farm in Fruita, Colorado! I will be there during their busy pumpkin patch season! It will be a new experience and I am definitely looking forward to it. It also works perfectly because I will get an extended time in Western Colorado without permanently moving there.

I am very blessed that I have this beautiful opportunity in life to spend exploring, learning and growing.

I’m pretty cool but I cry a lot

I often get asked how I’m so happy and positive all the time and I have a little secret I’d like to share with you, I cry a lot. My crying doesn’t always come from being sad either. I’m not secretly a sad person. I cry when I’m angry, lost, embarrassed and overwhelmed. Crying keeps me calm and might be a good reason why nobody sees me angry.

This morning, I had heavy feelings in my mind and chest and just wanted to cry but kept it in and I was starting to get in a bad mood. When I’m in a bad mood I cannot focus on anything. I couldn’t even tell you why I was upset. Finally, I cried and I cried for a few solid minutes. After I was finished crying I made the realization that my chest no longer felt heavy and my thoughts were collected again.  I actually thought “Wait…that’s it?” I then proceeded to clean my face and move on with my day.

“Stay strong…don’t cry” these words are not meant to be in the same sentence. Just because you cry doesn’t mean you’re weak. You’re strong for understanding your feelings and actually being comfortable for showing emotions. When you confront your feelings you can have more peace to move on with your day.

If you’re having a bad day, just cry, confront those emotions and move on. We have far too much shit to do to be weighted down by bad emotions.

Crying feels damn good.

I’ve been hiding from you.

Hiding_1

There’s a huge part of my image that I have been stereotyped as my entire life, which I have been able to live with up until I reached adulthood and have become a creative for a living. Always seen as the “good girl” sweetheart from Utah. This is not inaccurate. I am careful with my life choices, have a heart of gold and an innocence about me. However, there’s an edge and spark inside of me that I’ve been hiding from the world & it’s killing me creatively”

To become truly creative you have to be true to yourself, your emotions and overcome the fear of applying this not only to your work but sharing it with the world. This is what I study and this is what I preach. However, you must practice what you preach. I have been hiding my raw thoughts within my creative outlets. It sets my soul on fire when I can help others be creative and see them flourish into the true creative they are so what is stopping me from doing the same thing?

I’ve tried to be a perfectionist my entire life and it’s simply not fucking working anymore. This is not me asking for your acceptance because I have accepted who I am. I am not changing but blossoming into the person and creator that I truely am. I still have a passion for seeking wondrous life & spreading positivity. I have high hopes and aspirations that I can still inspire in travel, creativity and lifestyle all while leaving the sugar coating to the side.

I have a great amount of writings hidden away in my draft box & I’m ready to dust them off.

Walk with fear

During my travels I have been listening to many audiobooks. You may have heard of the award winning Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.  Gilbert also has an incredible book, Big Magic, which is all about creativity and creative living. There is a part of her book which I found most inspiriting, the difference between being fearless and being courageous.

When I tell others about my driving and traveling around they always seem in a bit of a shock that I am driving around by myself to all of these places which always leads them to ask “That doesn’t scare you?” and when I tell them that enjoy traveling by myself they follow up with the famous “Wow, you are fearless!”

Here’s the real truth behind all of this…I’m not the type of person to just wait for someone to hop in the car with me. I don’t believe I should wait for great opportunities just because I don’t have a friend or significant other to join me in the passenger seat of my car. I leave at sunrise and if you’re not there, you’re not going. This has nothing to do with being fearless but more so of being selfish with a great amount of wanderlust and motivation.

That being said, I have many fears when it comes to traveling. I understand all of the possibilities of what could happen while traveling. I watch the news, I read articles, I know and understand all of the terror. I have had my scary calls and have shed a few tears. I am not fearless.

I had the crazy opportunity at Tumalo Falls, a few miles from Bend, Oregon. My good friend Dustin is always talking me into crazy adventures. With the motivation of Dustin I did something I would have never dared to do. I jumped the wall at the top of Tumalo Falls to get as close as possible to the edge and take photos of the water rushing and crashing down, 90 feet below. This was not me being fearless, I was still scared shitless, I was allowing fear to walk by my side.

You do not need to be fearless to be courageous. When you are courageous you are allowing fear to walk by your side. Do not be fearless, when you are fearless you simply have no emotions. Creative and courageous individuals thrive on emotions. Be courageous and gladly walk hand in hand with fear itself. Let fear motivate you to see more, do more, and be the best you can be.

To the top of Targhee

Tetonia-25

There’s me, happy and alive at about 7,000 ft. elevation and almost but not quite at the top of our destination. Happy to sit down and let my lungs take in some air.

Grand Targhee Resort is located in Alta, Wyoming. A hop, skip and a jump from Eastern Idaho. My friends asked if I wanted to take a hike up Targhee Ski Resort where you can see a great view of the Tetons from the top. The hike was 3.5 miles which seemed easy enough to me since I’ve been on many hikes before, hikes much longer than this. However, I did not put into consideration that it was up hill and the elevation level was 5,000 more feet than my lungs are normally used to.

Every mile I thought “Almost there!” NOPE.

“Almost there!” KEEP DREAMING

“Almost there!” PASSING OUT YET?

We finally reached the top of the mountain and it was definitely rewarding. The type of rewarding when you accomplish difficult things. The type of rewarding that makes you shout “F*CK YEAH!” & then there was a beautiful view at the top of the Tetons. It was fabulous.

Once you reach the top of the mountain you can get a free lift down. Well, once we got to the top of our destination a storm was coming! They said they wouldn’t move the ski lift until the thunder had stopped and once they heard it rumble again the timing starts over at another 30 minutes.

Imagine, on top of this mountain surrounded by trees wondering if your death was a approaching due to a lightening strike. Dramatic Mariah being extra dramatic. This is when you decide “Screw it. We gotta get off this mountain!” So we booked it down the mountain. Once we got down it started pouring and hailing. Perfect time to sit and edit photos with some hot apple cider as you watch the sky falling outside the window.

Aside from my near death experience the hike was seriously so gorgeous! I loved that one side of the mountain looked like summer with wild flowers and the other side looked  like winter with snow. So many textures, colors and variety of scenery!
